Today there are problems caused by rapidly accelerating change and uneven nature of that change. In part these things are cause by the 'cleverness' of our traditional thinking systems and the lack of wisdom (Edward DeBono)

Over the past one hundred years or so we have experienced an exponential growth of the most immense  technological advancements mankind has ever seen. It is one unequaled and of great significance in our history. Our lifestyle has dramatically altered as we stand witness to progress in air travel, space travel , electronic communication, computer technology to name just a few. We have become beneficiaries to the stretched imaginations of the dreaming visionaries of our period.

Their accomplishments take us by the hand to great heights and then swept us breathlessly to a different sphere of existence where we can all share in an abundance of wealth and with tht more time. We have never once having had the opportunity to look back,to ruminate, advancing ever onward. Society’s insatiable propensity for pleasure welcomed and devoured anything and everything that afforded us more of everything and anything. Most importantly the time to enjoy it. Behaving like little unsupervised children with keys to a candy store , we focused singularly and devoured the many sights, sounds, taste, colors , savoring all of abundance, till there was no more room. No more room indeed. Only to wake the next day clutching our bellies as we looked pitifully at ourselves sensing something was very wrong . Suddenly we began to notice other things in our land of plenty. With that came a sudden apprehension to our demeanor which always seemed one step ahead of us.

These days the candy store it seems all but has crumbled. Everything we value around us and inescapably within us. Trustingly, we have handed ourselves on a plate to the purveyors of plenty with blind faith.  And meanwhile, we continue long days in our candy store slowly sucking , chewing, waiting . Now more confused than ever developing new inexplicable levels  of anxiety, frustration, depression, feelings of dissatisfaction and aimlessness. Leisure time is no longer pleasurable and with it comes much pain. As time passes, we wait, as we leave others to wrestle with our problems. We wait patiently and in the meantime the shelves in our candy store are replenished with an assortment of pills and liquids of various colors of white, red, yellow, and green and once again but for a short time pleasure is restored.

It would be simple to lay all this blame for our current malaise to a technology gone mad. Pointingthe accusing finger to the hand that feeds us, to what is in fact a monument to our boundless capabilities. That would only be skirting the real issue. If we look at history we see that after thousands of years very little does indeed change. Modern man to this day still wages war on
his own species. There are a number of distinct arguments as to why this has happened and why it will continue to happen. Unfortunately to discuss the various reasons advanced, would be only a post-mortem and nothing gleaned for our efforts. It is clear, that to let others seek solutions for us is not  the correct approach . Time will attest to this. To continue in this manner, would be like walking contrary to signs that proclaim “ You are going the Wrong Way “ . Oddly enough our solution in itself is paradoxical. In short personal autonomy, the vehicle of self-interest which is the very cause of this situation may also be our answer. There is a need to look within ourselves to understand our wants, desires, actions, plunge ourselves into the very
emptiness and restore whatever it is we have lost.

The question begs. Can we afford not to have an answer to our problem ? Will our answers come fromPsychology, Quantum Physics, Chaos Theory , Holographic Theory, Eastern or Western Philosophy ? I suggest that they will come from all. The one thing we now clearly understand is nothing remains the same. Do not put all your eggs in the same basket. We live in an enchanted world that is in a process of constantly becoming and the danger of aligning yourself to one particular dogma will end
in bitterness when evolutionary knowledge shakes it foundations loose. It is wise to survey the knowledge that you have acquired in life as just a stepping stone . A place where you can sit and rest awhile and be prepared for what new surprises lies ahead.
